Rich Varano: World Champion Grand
Master
To date
, he is one of only two people in the world to have
ever officially received this award of distinction from the world
championship sand sculpting organization
Rich paired with Karen Fralich of Toronto to out perform 32
other masters
working in a two-person team format. They were invited to Harrison
Hot Springs, British Columbia, from as far away as China, India,
and
Japan. The inaugural edition of this invitational event was only open
to masters who had previously won world championship medals over the
last decade and a half. Varano had indeed won nine of them prior to
this. It was ostensibly a battle between the best of the best. The
first place medals were in addition to the lion's share of $7,000.00 in
prize money. Plus, all expenses and an additional stipend for one week
of diligent effort were paid to the artists by the event organizing
committee.
This achievement is in addition and concurrent toVarano directing
another of the world's premier sand sculpting shows in Jesolo, Venice,
Italy

Varano designed the overall show and worked with a
local labor crew in this Adriatic coastal town preparing the
"Pound-Ups" for ten days before his
team of international sculptors arrived to help carve their original
interpretations from the huge mass over the
next ten days after that. It is for a public entertainment purpose in
this beach town, where it will be on display for all of July. A
donation of 10 % of all ticket sales goes to AMREF, a relief
organization that is establishing water wells in northern Uganda.
